Driver's License Information

Attention all Virgin Islands residents!  During the next several months, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be informing you of various changes that we are making when an applicant is obtaining a Real ID Driver’s License or Identification Card (ID).

The changes are a result of the Real ID Act of 2005 which is a part of Public Law 109-13 that Congress enacted, in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation.  The purpose of the Act is to standardize the issuance process of driver’s license and ID cards in all the 56 issuing jurisdictions in the United States, and its territories.

Therefore, ONLY ONE of the following original documents is required for an applicant to proof his or her legal status in order to obtain a Real ID driver’s license.  The documents are as follow:

Unexpired U.S. Passport, U.S. Certificate of Birth, Consular Report of

Birth Abroad, U.S. Certificate of Naturalization, U.S. Certificate of Citizenship, valid unexpired Permanent Resident Card, unexpired employment authorization document, unexpired foreign passport with a valid, unexpired U.S. visa affixed, Real ID Driver’s License or ID Card, a valid Military Identification Card or other photo identifications issued by the U.S. Government.

For Social Security Number verification, ONLY ONE of the following original documents is required to prove the validity of an applicant social security number.  The documents are as follows :

Social Security Card, W-2 Form with social security number on it, Social Security Administration 1099 Form, Non-Social Security Administration 1099 Form, Military DD Form 214, and pay stub with applicant’s name and Social Security Number on it.

For physical address verification, two official documents or identifications with applicant’s name and physical address are needed, or a Notarized letter by a property or lease holder, parent or guardian.

For more information or clarification, please call the St. Thomas BMV at 774-4268, the St. Croix BMV at 713-4268, or the St. John BMV at 776-6262.

Additionally, we want to let our military service members know that presently, we are unable to provide on-line driver's license renewal services, but expect to do so shortly after we have upgraded our software system. However, driver's license renewal services are available, but only on a case-by-case basis depending of the applicant's status.
